Mobile carriers responded to a staggering 1.3 million law enforcement requests last year for subscriber information, including text messages and phone location data, according to data provided to Congress.

The revelation marks the first time figures have been made available showing just how pervasive mobile snooping by the government has become in the United States.

The companies said they were working around the clock and charging millions in fees to keep up with ever-growing demands. At least one of the carriers urged Congress to clarify the law on when probable-cause warrants were required to divulge customer data.

Nine mobile phone companies forwarded the data as part of a Congressional privacy probe brought by Rep. Edward Markey, (D-Massachusetts), who co-chairs the Congressional Bi-partisan Privacy Caucus.

The literary, tech and thinking worlds are mourning the loss of Ray Bradbury, the revered science-fiction writer who died Wednesday at age 91. Bradbury, best known for his 1953 novel “Fahrenheit 451,” used his imagination to take a hard look at a world locked in a growing love affair with technology. His stories examined what humanity gained — and lost — by being plugged-in.

A few hours ago, a whole new Internet was switched on.

The old Internet is almost out of room. The new Internet is vastly bigger. It’s ready for trillions and trillions more computers, devices, Web sites and the like.

Confused? Here’s how it works: In order to be on the Internet, a device or Web site needs an address. The old Internet had about 4.3 billion IP addresses. That’s not a lot. There are more mobile phones today in use than that. The new Internet has 40 trillion trillion trillion (or, 340,000,000,000, 000,000,000,000,000, 000,000,000,000)!

A commentator on my recent post about the DEA installing license plate scanners on the nation’s interstate highways asks, “If you aren’t doing anything illegal why would you care if someone captures your license plate number?”

Another commentator countered: “If I’m not doing anything illegal, why do the police need to record my license plate number?”

It’s a great response. In essence, it points to our civilization’s core principle that the government is not supposed to look over our shoulder unless it has particularized suspicion that we are involved in wrongdoing.

But the original poster’s point is a frequent refrain: “Why should I care about surveillance if I have nothing to hide?” As a privacy advocate I have heard this question for many years, and over time developed my own list of answers, aided by the sharp thinking of others who have grappled with this question, such asDan Solove and Bruce Schneier.

The recent recession wiped out nearly two decades of Americans’ wealth, according togovernment data released Monday, with middle-class families bearing the brunt of the decline.

The Federal Reserve said the median net worth of families plunged by 39 percent in just three years, from $126,400 in 2007 to $77,300 in 2010. That puts Americans roughly on par with where they were in 1992.

Alabama became the first state to adopt a tough law protecting private property and due process by prohibiting any government involvement with or participation in a controversial United Nations scheme known as Agenda 21. Activists from across the political spectrum celebrated the measure’s approval as a significant victory against the UN “sustainability” plot, expressing hope that similar sovereignty-preserving measures would be adopted in other states as the nationwide battle heats up.

OK, this definitely  qualifies for the WTF category. Is this an actual prediction or some sort of predictive programming?

Maybe the final event that will seal the deal in terms of a new form of Global Government?

A 2010 Rockefeller Foundation document entitled “Scenarios for the Future of Technology and International Development” outlines a scenario which results in the death of 13,000 during the 2012 Olympics.

The first worrying prediction begins in 2012 when ‘the pandemic the world had been anticipating for years’, finally hits, infecting nearly 20 percent of world population and claiming 8 million lives. Due to this pandemic, the Rockefeller Foundation outlines how the public will welcome a more authoritative government and a tighter control across all aspects of life, including Biometric IDs for all citizens.
